I haven’t seen much on the writing front lately that doesn’t seem somewhat questionable. With that said, I haven’t checked out two of the following three contests, so don’t blame me if they don’t pan out.
Writer’s Digest is offering its only competition exclusively for poets. Regardless of styleâ€â€?rhyming, free verse, haiku and moreâ€â€?if your poems are 32 lines or fewer, they want them all. Entry Deadline: Wednesday, 20 December 2006. For guidelines, entry fees, and other pertinent information, visit the Writer’s Digest site.
Contest seeks Christian poets - I chose this one, because the grand prize is hefty. A $1,000 grand prize is being offered in a special religious poetry contest sponsored by Christian Fine Arts Society, with 50 prizes in all, including a $1,000 grand prize, of more than $4,000. To enter, send one poem of 21 lines or less to Free Poetry Contest, 1012 Beechwood Dr., Nappanee, IN 46550. Or enter online at www.freecontest.com. The deadline for entering is Dec. 16. Be sure your name and address appears on the page with your poem. If you wish a winner’s list please enclose a stamped return envelope.
The Seacoast Writers’ Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the craft of writing, is announcing its 2007 writing competition. The competition, now in its 17th year, is open to the public with no restrictions on geographic area. The deadline for entries is 1 February 2007.
The organization will be awarding cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners respectively in each of three different categories. The categories are: short story, maximum 3,500 words; poetry (one entry may include up to three poems, no word limit); and the personal essay, maximum 1,500 words. Contestants may enter in all three categories, but may submit only one entry in each category. For more information, visit the site.
