The effect of many poorer farmers pulling out of coffee production because of previously poor prices, particularly in both East and West Africa and Latin America, is now becoming clear. Production in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda has declined dramatically since 2002. The ICO (International Coffee Organisation) statistics show that production in Kenya fell from 945,000 bags in 2002 to 693,000 last year, while in Uganda the fall was even more pronounced � from 2.89 million bags to 2.16 million in 2005. The Forward Markets Commission (FMC) has sought the opinion of the Coffee Board on the request of MCX for launching futures trade in coffee. FMC chairman S Sundaresan told FE that since the request was linked to trade in a foreign exchange, the London International Finance and Futures Exchange (Liffe), the commission felt that it had to seek the views of the board and how it would be seen by the local farmers. Coffee worth millions of shillings was destroyed when a fire swept through a coffee drier at Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd. on 4 December. The drier contained 30 tonnes of coffee, an employee said. Read more at All Africa.

Last Thursday, London Stock Exchange-listed Caffe Nero agreed to a £225 million ($442 million) management buyout led by Ford. The company’s shares were up 3 pence (5.9 cents), or 1.13% to 268 pence after the news.The firm, which was launched by Ford in 1997, said it had backed the offer, which values each Caffe Nero share at 270 pence. Well, a cup of coffee can turn too bitter to drink in hours, but unroasted, well stored coffee beans can last up to 30 years, and Brazil’s government is capitalizing on this fact. With world coffee supplies tight and prices high, Brazil plans to zero out all that is left of its federal coffee stocks, much of which are beans nearly 30 years old, an agriculture ministry official said.
