And if coffee breaks can in any way help to cultivate and enhance an office’s culture of good networking and openness, then we should be encouraging people to try and use their email a bit less and communicate over a quick coffee – as well as reassuring them that moderate coffee consumption is perfectly safe and may confer health benefits.

What does one have to do with the other? On one hand, the consumption of caffeinated coffee was found to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 60% in a newly published study that included people at high risk for the disease. On the other hand, coffee can damage sperm and lead to failed pregnancies and birth defects. Where’s the balance? Do you need to make a choice?

Brazil’s biggest coffee cooperative, Cooxupé, said that its pioneer coffee shop in China covered costs in the first year of operation and that it saw scope for expansion. The shop, located in a shopping center in the former Chinese imperial capital of Xi’an, was opened in partnership with China’s FAB Export and Import Group and Belgium’s CPE Group. “China has a history of some 7,000 years but only started drinking coffee a few years ago.”
He said that Cooxupe will move its coffee shop to the ground floor of the same shopping center in Xi’an to be closer to consumers and have Starbucks Corp. as one of its neighbours. Read the rest of this entry »

26 Oct 2006: At Starbucks, we support the recognition of the source of our coffees and have a deep appreciation for the farmers that grow them. Starbucks has never filed an opposition to the Ethiopian government’s trademark application, nor claimed ownership to any regional names used to describe the origin of our coffees.
According to the National Coffee Association of America, which represents the major coffee roasters in the United States, the trademark application is not based upon sound economic advice and that the proposal as it stands would hurt Ethiopian coffee farmers economically. A Des Moines, Iowa, cafe is offering up a special political brew. The Mars Café is giving away a free cup of coffee to those who register to vote. So far, they’ve had roughly three dozen people register. Voters that the local ABC news found in the cafe today see the War in Iraq as a major issue. They also think that voting numbers will run about the same as the last midterm election, despite concern over the war.
If you’ve registered, then take the time to vote. (and Linda says: Especially YOU, woman!)
